Most of this psalm is fulfilled mainly in the church age. The only ones that are not fulfilled in the church age are:</div> <div> 4c - He will crush the oppressor.</div> <div> 8b - He will rule from the river to the ends of the earth.</div> <div> 9 - Desert people bow before Him, and His foes will lick dust.</div> <div> 10 - Kings give Him tribute.</div> <div> 11 - All kings bow down to Him, and all nations serve Him.</div> <div> 17d All the nations shall call Him blessed.</div> <div> 19b All the earth be filled with His glory.</div> <bR> <div> Another striking thing about this psalm, which can only be seen in the Hebrew is that there are 10 verbs prefixed with the conjunction "and", none of which are "<I>consecutives"</I>. Usually when "and" is prefixed to a verb in Biblical Hebrew, the verb becomes a "consecutive", which means that the tense of the verb is reversed and that the verb's action happens after a previous action. In this psalm all these verbs are imperfect/present/future. That one seems to be written by Solomon.</div> <div> Other psalms where the title means "for" rather than psalm authorship are: "For the overcomer" (Ps 4-6,8-9, 11-13, etc), "for the servant of the LORD" (Ps 18, 36), "for the sons of Korah" (Ps 88). </div> <div> <B> <A NAME="n1"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="1x1.gif" HEIGHT="1" ALIGN="bottom" WIDTH="1" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0" ></A></B></div> <div> <A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#1" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David"><B>1</B></A><B> </B>"The king" should be Solomon from the title. "The king's Son" must be the Messiah. He primarily judges His people, the church, and the Jewish people, His chosen (<A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#1pe4_17" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David">1Pet 4:17</A>). The individuals who believe the gospel become part of "the people", the church.</div> <div>  <A NAME="n4"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="1x1.gif" HEIGHT="1" ALIGN="bottom" WIDTH="1" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0" ></A></div> <div> <A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#4" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David"><B>4</B></A><A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#4" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David"> </A>lit. "the suffering ones of the people". </div> <div> This verse seems to repeat v2, but with more detail. </div> <div> "and crush the oppressor" is the first of 10 and-verbs in this psalm. It means that it is ongoing during the church age beginning when the Lord destroyed the devil on the cross (<A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#heb2_14" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David">Heb 2:14</A>) and is being accomplished by the Lord through the church (<A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#rom16_20" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David">Rom 16:20</A>). "with <I>the </I>sun and before <I>the </I>moon"</div> <bR> <div> The "they" subject of this verse is "generation of generations" at the end of the verse. The "generation of generations" is the subject of the verb "fear". "Generation of generations" is not a prepositional phrase describing how long the fear endures because there is no preposition before it. Whenever this phrase is used to describe time, there is a preposition preceding it ( <A HREF="psalm_72_m.htm#exo3_15" TARGET="TRLX_Middle" TITLE="Psalm 72 The Rule of the Messiah David">Exo 3:15; etc</A>). - Goldingay</div> <bR> <div> The phrase here "generation of generations" is unique. In all other places where "generation" is repeated, both words "generation" are singular. The Messiah will not only do justice for them but also come down to their level and refresh their spirits and souls through the Spirit.
