Psalm 72 - The Rule of the Messiah - David's last prayer
The last 3 verses of this psalm may be my favorite verses in the Bible.
A striking thing about this psalm is how many times it mentions the suffering, needy and poor. 4 Hebrew words are used:
ani - afflicted, poor, humble in vv 2, 4, 12 - 3x
avyon - needy in vv 4, 12, 13*2 - 4x
dal - poor in v13 - 1x
gaz - mown grass in v6 - 1x
------------
total = 9x
Besides the above, there is oppression (vv4,14), violence (v14), and martyrdom (v14).
This psalm is fulfilled over 4 ages: 1) OT time from Solomon until the Babylonian captivity, 2) the church age, 3) the millennial kingdom and 4) the new heavens and new earth. Most of this psalm is fulfilled mainly in the church age. The only ones that are not fulfilled in the church age are:
4c - He will crush the oppressor.
8b - He will rule from the river to the ends of the earth.
9 - Desert people bow before Him, and His foes will lick dust.
10 - Kings give Him tribute.
11 - All kings bow down to Him, and all nations serve Him.
17d All the nations shall call Him blessed.
19b All the earth be filled with His glory.
Another striking thing about this psalm, which can only be seen in the Hebrew is that there are 10 verbs prefixed with the conjunction "and", none of which are "consecutives". Usually when "and" is prefixed to a verb in Biblical Hebrew, the verb becomes a "consecutive", which means that the tense of the verb is reversed and that the verb's action happens after a previous action. In this psalm all these verbs are imperfect/present/future. These may be expressing a desire or prayer, and that the action continues.
The 10 and-verbs are:
v4b and may He will crush him that oppresses
v11 and may all kings bow down to Him
v14b and may their blood be precious in His eyes
v15b and may they give to Him of the gold of Sheba
v15c and may they pray in His behalf
v16c and may some of the city flourish
v17c and may they bless themselves in Him
v19b and may the whole earth will filled with His glo ry
The title by itself could mean either "through Solomon" or "for Solomon", but since the last verse of the psalm says it is by David, then it must mean "for Solomon", which is how LXX and Vulgate translated it.
There is one other psalm with "Solomon" in the title, Psalm 127. That one seems to be written by Solomon.
Other psalms where the title means "for" rather than psalm authorship are: "For the overcomer" (Ps 4-6,8-9, 11-13, etc), "for the servant of the LORD" (Ps 18, 36), "for the sons of Korah" (Ps 88).
1 "The king" should be Solomon from the title. "The king's Son" must be the Messiah. So the Messiah is a descendant of Solomon and not only of David.
2 The Messiah does this during the church age. He primarily judges His people, the church, and the Jewish people, His chosen ( 1Pet 4:17). There is suffering of God's people during the church age.
3 From the mountains and hills the gospel is preached. ref. Isa 40:9; 52:7; etc. The individuals who believe the gospel become part of "the people", the church.
4 lit. "the suffering ones of the people".
This verse seems to repeat v2, but with more detail.
"and crush the oppressor" is the first of 10 and-verbs in this psalm. It means that it is ongoing during the church age beginning when the Lord destroyed the devil on the cross ( Heb 2:14) and is being accomplished by the Lord through the church ( Rom 16:20). It will be fully accomplished during when the Lord returns ( Rev 20:2-3,10).
5 "Thee" in this verse is God.
lit. "with the sun and before the moon"
The "they" subject of this verse is "generation of generations" at the end of the verse. The "generation of generations" is the subject of the verb "fear". "Generation of generations" is not a prepositional phrase describing how long the fear endures because there is no preposition before it. Whenever this phrase is used to describe time, there is a preposition preceding it ( Exo 3:15; etc). - Goldingay
The phrase here "generation of generations" is unique. In all other places where "generation" is repeated, both words "generation" are singular. I think it means all generations starting with the Messiah's first coming ( 1Pet 2:9; Luke 1:48-50; etc)
6 The "mown grass" is the suffering people in the previous verses. The Messiah will not only do justice for them but also come down to their level and refresh their spirits and souls through the Spirit. He will do this during the church age.
7 Because of the watering of the Spirit in the previous verse, and because of judgments in vv 1-4, righteousness will sprout in people in the church. Mat 5:6,20; etc
8 The Messiah's rule will spread to people over the whole earth during the church age. It will not be all people or most people, but His gospel will be believed unto the ends of the earth. Mat 28:18-20; etc
I think "from sea to sea" refers to the church age, when He rules the world without a central location. I think "from the river to the ends of the earth" refers to the millennial kingdom, when He will rule from Jerusalem.
9 Desert dwellers are usually poor. They include the Arabs who are mostly enemies of Christ and of Israel, but many of them, especially Egypt and Assyria, will be saved. ( Isaiah 19:21-25).
10 Tarshish was the end of the known ancient world, either Spain or Britain. Tarshish is the end of the world toward the west, Sheba the end of the world toward the south ( 1Ki 10:10; Mat 12:42). Seba is a descendant of Cush (Ethiopia).
These are the ends of the earth in v8.
Many races of people from the ends of the earth will offer from their material wealth to further Christ's gospel during the church age. Sheba is a rich place because of the gold there. Seba seems to be a poor country. Rich and poor offer to the Lord's purpose, and the Lord blesses the gift and the giver according to what they have. ( Mar 12:41-44)
Seafaring places are good centers from which to spread the gospel; and seafaring men often make earnest heralds of the cross. Tarshish of old was so far away, that to the eastern mind it was lost in its remoteness, - Spurgeon
11 All kings do not bow down to the Messiah in the church age. People from all nations serve him now, but not the political entities denoted by the word "nations". This is David's prayer and will be fulfilled when the Lord returns and in the millennium. ( Phil 2:8-11)
The nations during the millennium are good gentiles who were alive when the Lord returned, the sheep in Matt 25 who are the nations in Rev 20.
12 "for" gives the reason that all kings will bow down to Him and all nations serve Him. It is because He delivers the poor, needy and suffering. This is a willing submission, not forced. This happens during the church age.
The needy will cry for help. There is the need for crying prayer in the church age ( v15). Previously the needy and suffering mentioned were among God's people (vv2,4). Here the King helps the needy and suffering among all nations.
"When he crieth - He permits them to be so needy as to be driven to cry bitterly for help, but then he hears them, and comes to their aid.
The proverb says, "God helps those that help themselves; "but it is yet more true that Jesus helps those who cannot help themselves, nor find help in others. All helpless ones are under the especial care of Zion's compassionate King; let them hasten to put themselves in fellowship with him. Let them look to him, for he is looking for them." - Spurgeon
13 This happens during the church age.
15 The queen of Sheba, brought gold to Solomon from the end of the earth. ( 1Ki 10:10). During the millennium they will do more. (v10, Isa 60:6).
This verse also takes place in the church age. Riches are offered to the King for His gospel. This is different than in v10 where it was the kings that offered. Here it is unspecified people that offer the gold.
They will pray in His name Joh 16:23 and for His kingdom to come.
16 "the city's dwellers will bloom like a garden" is literally "they of the city shall bloom like the herb of the earth".
The Hebrew word pisah is considered to be a hapax, that is only used in this one place in the Bible, so its meaning is unknown. It is the feminine form of the word "color" for Joseph's coat of many colors ( Gen 37:3) and David's virgin daughters' vests of many colors ( 2Sam 13:18).
The grain on the mountain top is the first mature fruit of the budding righteousness during the church age in v7. Rev 14:1-5.; Lev 23:10-11.
I think the "colors" are different gifts and different races.
I think "shake" means that they disrupt the earth through prayer ( Ps 18:7)
The dwellers of the city are the dwellers of the New Jerusalem, the harvest of all God's people.
17 This takes place in the church age and continues in the millennium.
18 This takes place during the church age and continues in the millennium.
19 lit. " and all the earth be filled ..."
lit. "Amen and Amen"
"All earth be filled with His glory" - is happening during the church age and will be fulfilled in the New Heaven and New Earth. Isa 6:3; etc
David calls himself David, the son of Jesse, not David, the king, going back to his poor roots.
These last 3 verses are a great end to David's psalms.
I think this is David's last psalm that he composed, but it may just mean that it is the last of David's prayer-psalms. Only 3 of David's psalms are explicitly called "a prayer" in the title: Ps 17:1; 86:1; 142:1, but most psalms are prayers. I think the first prayer-psalm is Psalm 3.

(tune "Father, I know that all my life" by Anna Waring 8.6.8.6.8.6.)
1 1 God, Your judgments give to the king
and Your righteousness to
the king's Son. 2 He'll judge Your people
with righteousness like You,
and with judgment Your suff'ring ones
full of compassion true.
2 3 The mountains shall carry peace to
the people, and the hills
by righteousness. 4 He'll do justice
to the suff'ring people.
He'll save the needy's children and
crush the oppressor too.
3 5 They shall fear Thee as long as sun
and the moon do not end,
gen'ration of generations.
6 Like rain He will descend
upon the mown grass, like strong rains
watering the earth's ends.
4 7 In His days shall righteousness bud
and abundance of peace
until the moon shall be no more,
8 and may His rule increase
from sea to sea and from river
until the earth's endings.
5 9 Before Him shall the desert tribes
bow and His foes lick dust.
10 The Kings of Tarshish and the isles
a gift will render up.
Kings of Sheba and Seba will
give tribute to the Just.
6 11 And may all kings bow down to Him.
All nations shall serve Him
12 for He'll deliver the needy
who cries and the suff'ring
with no helper. 13 He will pity
the poor and the needy,
7 and the souls of the needy He
will save abundantly.
14 From oppression and from violence,
their soul He will redeem,
and may their blood in His sight be
precious, 15 and live may He.
8 And may there to Him given be
from the gold of Sheba;
and let prayer be continually
in His behalf be made.
All the day He will bless-ed be.
16 There'll be colors of grain
9 on the mountain top of the earth.
It's fruit like Lebanon
shall shake, and the city's dwellers
will bloom like a garden.
17 His name shall become forever.
His name before the sun
10 shall continue forever, and
men bless themselves in Him.
All the nations shall call Him blessed.
18 Bless-ed be the LORD God,
the God of Israel, who alone
doeth works of wonder.
11 19 And blessed be His glorious name
forever to the brim,
all earth be filled with His glory.
Amen, again Amen.
20 David the son of Jesse's prayers
with this psalm are ended .

Philippians 2:9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,

33 and he will set the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on his left.
34 Then shall the King say to those on his right hand, Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the world's foundation:
35 for I hungered, and ye gave me to eat; I thirsted, and ye gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in;
36 naked, and ye clothed me; I was ill, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came to me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungering, and nourished thee; or thirsting, and gave thee to drink?
38 and when saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in; or naked, and clothed thee?
39 and when saw we thee ill, or in prison, and came to thee?
40 And the King answering shall say to them, Verily, I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.
41 Then shall he say also to those on the left, Go from me, cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 for I hungered, and ye gave me not to eat; I thirsted, and ye gave me not to drink;
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye did not clothe me; ill, and in prison, and ye did not visit me.
44 Then shall *they* also answer saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungering, or thirsting, or a stranger, or naked, or ill, or in prison, and have not ministered to thee?
45 Then shall he answer them saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have not done it to one of these least, neither have ye done it to me.
46 And these shall go away into eternal punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.
Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison
8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.
9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.
10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

42 Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans.
43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;
44 "for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood."

3 and they sing a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders. And no one could learn that song save the hundred and forty-four thousand who were bought from the earth.
4 These are they who have not been defiled with women, for they are virgins: these are they who follow the Lamb wheresoever it goes. These have been bought from men as first-fruits to God and to the Lamb:
5 and in their mouths was no lie found; for they are blameless.
