1 1  Why is it    that Thou, LORD,
dost stand from us afar?
Why do You   hide Yourself
 when times so troublous are?
2  Wicked in loftiness the lowly oppress.
They will be ensnared in their own craftiness,

2 3 for wicked  praises the
desire of his soul great.
and blesses covetous,
while the LORD he does hate.
4  Wicked, his nose turned up, seeks not in his thoughts.
All his purposes say, There's no place for God.

3 5  His ways always succeed.
Thy judgments, from his sight,
are too high. All his foes
 he puffs at with despite.
6  Within his heart says he, Moved I'll never be,
to all generations, no adversity.

4 7  His mouth with  fraud, deceit,
is filled up with cursing;
and under his tongue is
 mischief and vanity.
8  In towns, he sets ambush, (8.1) he slays innocents.
His eyes secretly watch for unfortunates,

5 9  lies in wait   secretly,
like lion in thicket,
lies in wait for needy,
 draws him into his net.
10 Himself he humbles low, crouches down withal,
so that unfortunates by his strong ones fall.

6 11 He has said   in his heart,
The Lord has quite forgot;
He hides His face, and He
 forever sees it not.
12 O LORD God, do arise. Lift up your hand. Yet,
The lowly, meek, suff'ring, O do not forget.

7 13 Why is it   the wicked
thus does the Lord despise?
That God will it require
he in his heart denies. (13.1)
14 You've seen it. Their mischief and spite You'll repay. (14.1)
The wretch trusts self to Thee. You're the orphan's stay.

8 15 The arm break of wicked,
and of the evil one.
Seek out his   wickedness,
 until Thou will find none.
16 The LORD's King forever to eternity.
The nations from His land perish'd utterly.

9 17 O LORD God,   the humble,
their desire You did hear.
Thou prepare their heart, and
will cause Your ear to hear
18 to judge the fatherless and those oppressed sore,
that mortal man of earth oppress them no more.

8.1. Lit. He sits in the luking places of the villages. In the secret places ...
13.1. Lit. He has said in his heart, You will not require it.
14.1. Lit. You have seen, For You Yourself behold mischief and strife to repay by Your hand.
