Psalm 9 To the Overcomer, Virgins for the Son, a Psalm of David
Tune: chorus of #39 “Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice”
Meter: 6.6.6.6.11.11
1 I will praise, I will praise,
the Lord with my whole heart.
I'll recount all of Thy
wondrous works from the start.
2 I will be so happy and rejoice in Thee.
To Thy name, O Most High, praises I will sing.
3 When my foes are turned back,
they will perish and fall (1)
from Your face, (v4) for You have
maintained my right and cause.
You're righteously judging. On the throne You sit.
5 You rebuked nations. You destroyed the wicked.
You have put out their name
for ever and ever.
6 Enemy, Destructions
are ended forever.
They're des'late for ever, which You've overthrown,
the cities whose very remembrance is gone.
7 But the Lord sits for'ere.
in His throne for judgment.
8 And `tis He that will judge
the world with righteousness.
He'll execute judgment upon the nations(2)
with equity and no respect of persons.
9 And the Lord will be a
refuge to the oppressed,
a refuge, a refuge
in the times of distress.
10 And they that know Thy name will put trust in Thee,
for Thou, LORD, has not forsook them that seek Thee.
11 Sing praises to the LORD,
Who's dwelling in Zion.
Tell among the peoples
His doings, for when
12 He inquires after blood, He remembers them.
The afflicted ones' cry He's not forgotten.
13 Be gracious to me, Lord,
Look upon my estate.(3)
From the ones that hate me,
Lift me up from death's gate.
14 That I may show forth all Thy praise in Zion.
In her gates(4) I'll rejoice in Thy salvation.
15 The nations are sunk down
in the pit that they made.
In the net that they hid
is their own foot taken.
16 By the judgment He's done, the Lord is made known.
The wicked's ensnared by the work his hands own.
<Higgaion. Selah>.
17 The wicked will return,
will return to Sheol,
all nations that forget
there is God over all.
18 For those who are in need He'll forget never.
The hope of the meek shall not perish for'er.
19 O LORD God, now arise
Do not let man prevail.
The nations will be judged
Before Your face and wail.
20 Put them in fear, Lord, that the nations may know
that they are but men and how little they know.
